Kappa Number and Brightness Measurement

The ASD QualitySpec® K-B offers the pulping industry an essential tool for improving quality and increasing profits.

QualitySpec® K-B system close-up of sampling area with pulp sample puckIn the competitive pulp market, eliminating process guesswork and maximizing procedural gain are absolute necessities. As customers demand higher levels of product quality, at-line testing of Kappa number and pulp brightness becomes increasingly important. The QualitySpec® K-B pulp analyzer satisfies the need for quickly generated, accurate data on Kappa number and brightness for pulp samples, providing more accurate control of the pulping and bleaching processes.

Developed in cooperation with FP Innovations – PAPRICAN, The QualitySpec® K-B allows fiber-line testers and operators to take numerous Kappa number and pulp brightness measurements per hour at multiple bleach plant process locations—from digester blowline to fully bleached pulp—regardless of furnish type. The QualitySpec® K-B employs a patent-pending method for rapid, non-contact, non-destructive analysis of Kraft pulp.

Combined with a mill’s process control strategy, the QualitySpec® K-B increases the effectiveness of pulp digester feed-back control and feed-forward control of the bleach plant. The QualitySpec® K-B also helps minimize Kappa number variation, bleach plant chemical costs, and the amount of off-grade pulp produced in the process.

QualitySpec® K-B System Benefits:

  • Increases the sample rate by up to 200% vs. conventional methods* without the need for additional operators. The result is reduced process and sampling variability, more efficient use of process chemicals, and significant savings in wood purchase cost.
  • The environmentally friendly analysis method reduces the need for hazardous testing chemicals by up to $100,000 per year and process chemicals by up to $250,000 per year.
  • Using the OPC client server, the data stream seamlessly integrates into the mill’s DCS control system.
  • Automated sample preparation eliminates the sample variability typically found in manual Kappa number-pulp brightness tests.
  • Testing methodology is directly correlated to TAPPI standard T-236 for Kappa number and ISO brightness.
  • Eliminates the operator’s exposure to hazardous chemicals.

The QualitySpec® K-B is the ideal replacement for older, unserviceable technology that has been present in the pulp industry for more than two decades. As a more versatile, more advanced solution, the QualitySpec® K-B offers additional process knowledge through the combination of Kappa number and pulp brightness measurement. For pulp mills looking to replace aging devices, the QualitySpec® K-B is the premier solution.
