The process by which incident illumination reacts with the sample and is converted to radiant energy that subsequently travels back away from the sample surface. All real reflection involves varying degrees of specular reflection (θ_r = θ_i) and diffuse reflection (θ_r ≠ θ_i). Both diffuse and specular components are wavelength dependent. There is no absorption at the specular angle.
