09.28.2010 — ASD Inc., a global leader in high-performance analytical instrumentation and materials measurement solutions, today announced Mapping Solutions Ltd. as a new distributor for the Middle Eastern remote sensing market.
Mapping Solutions is led by Dr. Amer Alroichdi, who obtained a Ph.D. in hyperspectral remote sensing from the University of Manchester. Dr. Alroichdi is already very familiar with ASD, having spent four years in the research field and laboratory using a FieldSpec® instrument from ASD to develop a model to measure physical and biochemical properties of organic soil (peat) which has an environmental impact on climate change.
Mapping Solutions specializes in the field of hyperspectral data acquisition, processing and analysis. The company is focused on selling airborne hyperspectral cameras to academic and military institutions and industrial customers in the region. However, Dr. Alroichdi said he has always recommended to his customers that they also should have a spectroradiometer to support their assessment and ground truthing work.
ASD instruments are a natural and necessary addition to Mapping Solutions’ hyperspectral-centric product offerings. The FieldSpec line of instruments, including the FieldSpec HandHeld 2™ and FieldSpec 3, provides the performance customers demand across a broad range of applications. Mapping Solutions sells ASD remote sensing products in North Africa and the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Yemen, Lebanon, Egypt, Sudan, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and Mauritania.
“From my experience working in the region and my relationship with the remote sensing community in the Middle East, ASD offers the most powerful tool for on-site measurement,” said Alroichdi. “It’s operational out of the box, and only requires one operator to function. The instruments are easy to carry and use and most importantly, you can easily port the data into other software programs.”
Alroichdi said he believes the key advantage scientists will find in ASD’s newest instrument, the HandHeld 2, is that it provides untethered portability and integral tiltable LCD screen that allows for easy spectrum viewing independent of a computer. It also has significant onboard spectra capacity and runs on standard AA batteries. These are key features due to limited access to electricity when collecting spectral measurements in the field.
“Dr. Alroichidi is a superb partner for ASD because of his significant remote sensing knowledge and his prior experience using our equipment in the field and laboratory,” said Tom Brown, ASD’s vice president of sales and channel management.
“His deep understanding of the instruments and their application is a great benefit to our customers as Dr. Alroichidi educates them on how to use ASD instruments to generate the most valuable, actionable information.”
