Annual awards recognize a diverse selection of research utilizing near-infrared (NIR) reflectance spectroscopy
BOULDER, Colo. – March 24, 2015 – ASD Inc., a PANalytical company and a global leader in high-performance NIR analytical instrumentation and materials analysis solutions, announced today the winners of the 2015 Students in Mining TerraSpec Instrument Program.
Five candidates have been granted the use of a TerraSpec® 4 mineral analyzer and The Spectral Geologist (TSG®) Pro mineral analysis software. The TerraSpec 4 uses flexible, near-infrared spectroscopy to measure a wide variety of samples, offering better visibility for students conducting mineral analysis as part of their mining, energy or geothermal research.
For the first time in the program’s history, one student has been granted temporary use of the TerraSpec Halo mineral identifier. This handheld, full-range NIR spectrometer will help the student determine mineralogy through its all-in-one capture capabilities and immediate multi-mineral results.
“The Students in Mining program was developed to enhance research in the mining and energy industries,” said Chris Sherry, geologist and senior mining market manager at ASD Inc. “As graduate students are usually operating on very tight budgets, we’re hopeful that the inclusion of the TerraSpec Halo and its immediate on-instrument results will make field programs more cost-effective for our student researchers.”
Student winners were selected based on multiple criteria including the creative application of the TerraSpec line in their research proposals.

To complement their field work, recipients are eligible to receive up to USD 500 to cover publication charges and/or travel assistance for presentation of their research completed as part of the Students in Mining program.
